The Poon Hill Trek is a perfect introduction to Nepal trekking. It is an ideal mountain adventure for those who are new to trekking activities. With just enough challenge, spectacular scenery and cultural insight, the trek is not too overwhelming but rewarding and satisfying.
4 Day Poon Hill Trek is easy and can be accomplished by the trekkers of all fitness levels, even by beginners and families. It is one of the easiest treks in Nepal with well marked and established trails that follow a gentle climb. The maximum altitude reached is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, so altitude sickness is not a major concern during this mountain journey.
There are sufficient places where you can rest and take in the view. Since the trek has been segmented into relatively short days, you are not put under too much stress. Most of the walk is on paved stone paths passing through dense woodlands, terraced farms and quaint villages offering a picturesque and rich experience.
The Poon Hill Trek is not strenuous at all. It is a 4 to 6 hour walk each day with some steep rocky staircases which can be weary but manageable with breaks in between. The paths are well maintained and accommodation and food facilities are readily available along the trail. The majority of people can comfortably walk the 4 day Poon Hill Trek with a basic level of fitness, resolve and good timing.
The best time for trekking to Ghorepani Poon Hill is the spring with months March, April and May and autumn ranging from September to November. These seasons are marked with clear weather, moderate temperatures, dry trekking paths and unobstructed vistas of the Himalayas.
The trails are adorned with flowering rhododendron forests in spring which adds color and aroma to your trek. The weather is mostly sunny and mildly warm in the daytime, making the walk comfortable. Since the sky is crystal clear devoid of clouds, the time is ideal for observing the uninterrupted mythical sunrise from Poon Hill.
Autumn brings post-monsoon clarity which is marked by fresh, crisp air, dustless surroundings, cloudless skies and vivid mountain scenery. Being the busy season to trek in Nepal, the trails are more populated and the local tea houses are well prepared for guests. The climate is stable and moderate which makes the hike easy, manageable and delightful. Autumn is also a festive season in Nepal when you can possibly witness vibrant celebrations along the way, providing a cultural touch to the trek.
While spring and fall are ideal, the Poon Hill Trek is possible all year round, subject to your level of tolerance with weather. It can be cold in winter, especially at elevated zones but it has quieter trails and snowy landscapes for those who desire a serene, cold experience. Likewise, monsoon season brings frequent downpours making the paths slippery and the mountain scenery misty. But it has greenery everywhere and fewer travelers during this time allow for a tranquil and immersive trekking experience.
In short, with correct gear and organization, the Poon Hill Trek can be an excellent experience during almost any period of the year.
Food and Accommodation during the 4 Day Poon Hill Trek are offered by various tea houses and lodges along the way. They provide decent meals made of locally available ingredients. The tea houses are owned by families and offer you a mix of traditional Nepali cuisine like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) and Tibetan momo (dumplings) and Western fare like pasta, pancakes and noodles.
During the journey, you will enjoy board meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) which are hearty and filling giving you the energy to drive through the day’s trek. Likewise, tea and coffee are always available to warm you up during breaks. The option of fresh fruit every evening after dinner is another refreshing treat and a delightful way to finish the day.
Accommodation on the Poon Hill Trek’s tea houses is simple and cozy which is a welcome relief after trekking all day. The rooms are typically fitted with basic items like beds, a little table and windows leading into the beautiful scenery of the mountains. The rooms themselves are not that luxurious but clean and the bed usually consists of a warm blanket, pillows and mattresses.
Some of the tea houses have even got hot showers and internet facilities at extra cost. The dining rooms are communal, comfortable and homely, just right for engaging with other trekkers, hearing stories and enjoying the hot meal.
In a nutshell, accommodation and food during the Poon Hill Trek is a good balance of comfort and local charm, giving you ample rest and nourishment while acquainting you with the culture and hospitality of the mountain people.
Altitude sickness is simply not an issue at all in the 4 days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek because the maximum altitude attained is only 3,210 meters/10,531 feet at Poon Hill. Even though the altitude is relatively modest compared to that of treks in other regions of Nepal, there are a few people who might still suffer from slight symptoms.
The Poon Hill Trek is carefully planned with a gradual incline so that your body gets used to it naturally. However, mild symptoms such as shortness of breath, headache, weakness or dizziness can be experienced if you ascend too quickly without allowing your body enough rest. Hydration, walking comfortably at a relaxed pace and resting well each night are simple but effective ways of avoiding any discomfort.
The vast majority of hikers complete the trek without difficulty, so this is one of the safest and most convenient Himalayan treks as far as altitude is concerned.
