Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is an exciting journey of faith, self-discovery and unforgettable adventure. Mt. Kailash (6,638m/ 21,778ft) which is located in the remote part of the Tibetan Himalayas is considered a sacred monument in Hinduism, Buddhism, Bon traditions and Jainism. This religious part of the Himalayas is believed to be the adobe of Lord Shiva and a place with great spiritual significance.
Unlike the flight-based routes, this overland route takes travelers from Kathmandu (Nepal) to Tibet (China) via the Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong border. The drive passes through the stunning landscape of both nations, traditional villages and ancient monasteries/temples. Holy bath in the sacred Lake Mansarovar and completing the Kailash Kora/ Parikrama (circumambulation) are the major highlights of this journey.
Many pilgrims from both Hindu and Buddhist communities believe that doing Kailash Kora can erase bad karma and lead toward enlightenment. These rituals are said to bring spiritual purification and blessing from the supreme diety who oversees all to those who successfully complete this journey.
This overland route also offers gradual acclimatization making it comfortable for the pilgrims to traverse across the high altitude points and a culturally immersive experience. Although the trip involves long traveling hours and high-altitude trekking, this Kailash Mansarovar Overland Yatra is well worth the effort for spiritual enthusiasts who are seeking a deeply meaningful and unforgettable pilgrimage.

A Budget-Friendly Option: Compared to the helicopter route which can be quite expensive, the over-land route is a more affordable choice for pilgrims. The overland route reduces the expenses of the costly airplane flight and helicopter rides which makes it accessible for a large number of devotees.
Gradual Acclimatization and Better Adaptation to High Altitude: As there is a risk of altitude sickness on the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour, it can be a challenging aspect of the overall journey. However, this overland route offers enough time to acclimatize without jumping to significant altitude points. This provides travelers with a better adaptation to the high-altitude Tibetan atmosphere.
Opportunity to Experience Diverse Landscape and Scenic Beauty: Doing this overland tour is like participating in an unmatched visual experience. As the journey passes through the lush valleys, rugged terrains, Himalayan landscapes and the serene Tibetan plain, this route will allow travelers to fully immerse in the beauty of nature and admire the changing landscapes at a relaxed pace.
Deep Spiritual and Cultural Experience: The Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is not just about reaching the base of sacred Mount Kailash but it is also a spiritual journey itself. Doing the overland tour will give the pilgrims the opportunity to connect more deeply with their faith, interact with the local communities and witness the charming Tibetan Buddhist culture along the way.
More Time for Rituals and Sacred Ceremonies: This on road route will provide sufficient time to participate in the religious rituals at the key sacred sites. Unlike the air travel options where time is limited, overland travelers can take their time for spiritual practices. This can be said for holy baths, circumnavigation, havan and other religious rituals.
Opportunity to Travel in a Group and Strengthen Bonds: As this mode of traveling is a cost-efficient venture and more accessible journey, it often attracts large groups of pilgrims. Traveling in a group can be a spiritually uplifting and emotionally supportive experience. You will have shared spiritual experiences, prayers and rituals along the way. Similarly, it will also be emotionally supportive during the physically demanding trek. You may also be able to make lifelong friendships with fellow pilgrims.
A Sense of Aventure and Personal Accomplishment: Undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the overland route is an exciting option. This traveling mode involves long drives, passing rugged terrain and overcoming the high-altitude trekking part. Thus it is a physically and mentally demanding endeavor. However, overcoming teh challenges adds to the sense of personal achievement.

During this spiritual tour, you will be able to enjoy a wide range of dishes. The major priority of the guesthouse for food preparation is simple nutritious and hygienic vegetarian meals. You will be able to enjoy vegetarian dishes like Dal Bhat, Parathas, Seasonal Vegetables, Paneer, Curry, Porridge, Thukpa, Dumpling, etc. The meals are also prepared without using onion and garlic if pilgrims don’t prefer it.
Along the way, you will also be able to buy packed foods like dry fruits, instant noodles, biscuits, chocolate bars and other snacks. Due to the spiritual significance of the region non-vegetarian food and alcohol are prohibited. As the food option is limited in remote areas, especially near the mountain, you should consider packing sufficient snacks, drinks and energy bars to maintain your energy level.
Also, as for the beverage option, the guesthouses offer herbal tea, butter tea and bottled water. Boiled water is the safest drinking option in this part as clean drinking water resources are sacred. Travelers are also recommended to bring personal utensils like thermos, spoons and reusable cups for convenience.
The accommodation option for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra differs depending on the region. During the staying part in Kathmandu, you will stay at a top-tier star hotel enjoying all the modern amenities. As you start your journey and head toward the Tibetan side, you will stay at the simple guesthouses or lodges that are operated by locals.
Rooms are typically shared with 2 to 4 people depending on the arrangement and the bathrooms are common. Although basic linens and blankets are provided, it is recommended that you should bring a sleeping bag. Temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes, especially at nighttime so bringing a sleeping bag will help you sleep comfortably.
As for the higher region at Lake Mansarovar and during Kailash Kora there are basic lodges or dormitory-style lodges. During the peak travel season as the guesthouses may be crowded, you can also choose the tenting option which will be managed by the agency.
Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is a physically and mentally demanding endeavor. Although you will drive in a comfortable vehicle, you will have to take part in a physically demanding trek during the three days of Kailash Kora. During the parikrama of Mt. Kailash, you will traverse across the rugged mountain terrain for multiple hours. You will also need to cross the major Himalayan pass, Dolma La Pass (5,630m/ 18,471ft), during this portion.
However, the trails are not strenuously steep and you will maintain a gradual pace. The second day of kora can be particularly challenging as you will have to completely walk for 7 to 8 hours. So, if you are wondering about what kind of fitness is necessary for this trip, you will at least need basic fitness.
You can start doing some light exercises a few weeks prior to the trip to make your journey comfortable. The hike is also an effective method to prepare for the mountain terrain and partake in acclimatization practices. If you have any kind of health complication, you should consult your physician about the tour.

As the altitude gain is significant in this tour, it is natural to be worried about the high altitude complication known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). This generally occurs to travelers who find it hard to adapt to high altitude atmosphere which has low oxygen compared to the sea levels. There can be several reasons that can trigger altitude sickness such as lack of acclimatization, over-exhaustion, dehydration, improper diet, respiratory capacity of individuals, etc.
However, while doing this Mansarovar overland tour with Nepal Recreation, you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness. We have set a gradual ascend for the trip which means you will not climb too fast to the higher regions. This will give your body enough time to adjust to the Tibetan atmosphere. Similarly, you will also get an acclimatization day at Kyirong (2,700m/ 8,858ft) which will significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Moreover, during the three-day Kailash Kora where you will need to travel on your feet, you will follow a gradual ascent as well. You will also have sufficient breaks along parikrama route so your body will get enough period to rest. Our itinerary plan has been designed by industry experts which ensures that your trip will be comfortable and memorable without any safety or health-related risks.
Note: To avoid the risk of altitude sickness during your tour, you need to stay hydrated (drink at least 2-3 liters of water), eat healthy and nutritious meals and keep yourself warm. You can also take altitude scenes medication but make sure to consult with a doctor first.
