The flight lasts about 25-30 minutes, but it gives you breathtaking views of green hills, deep valleys, and the distant Himalayas.

Many flights operate during the main trekking seasons, like spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). However, due to the busy Kathmandu air traffic, flights are sometimes shifted to Ramechhap Airport. It is about a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu. Even though this adds road travel time, the flight from Ramechhap to Lukla is also scenic and exciting.

You cross your first suspension bridges, walking along the Dudh Khosi River and enjoying views of green hills and stone houses. The path is well marked. There are many places to rest, eat, or refill water. Most trekkers stay overnight in Phakding at 2,610m, which helps with gradual acclimatization.

On the second day, the trek continues from Phakding to Namche Bazaar. It is more challenging. You need to cross several suspension bridges. You will pass villages like TikTok, Benkar, and Monjo. Your permits are checked before entering the Sagarmatha National Park gate. The trail remains comfortable until Jorsalle, but after that, it gets steeper.

One of the main highlights and challenges of this day is crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge. It is the highest and most famous bridge on the way to Everest. You can reach there by travelling by road and then trekking. This route is longer than the flight option. This option is safer for people who do not prefer to take small mountain flights.

The most common road routes are :

Kathmandu to Salleri (2,390 m)

You can take a jeep from Kathmandu to Salleri. Salleri is the headquarters of the Solukhumbu district. The drive takes around 9-10 hours, depending on road conditions. The roads are partly paved and partly rough, but the mountain scenery is very beautiful. After reaching Salleri, you can begin trekking toward Phakding and Namche. The full trek takes 3-4 Days to reach Namche Bazaar.

Kathmandu to Tham Danda (New Road Option)

Another popular option for you is travelling to Tham Danda. It is currently the closest you can reach to Lukla by road. The drive takes 10–12 hours by jeep. From Tham Danda, it takes about 1 full day of trekking to reach Lukla. Then you can continue the usual Lukla- Phakding -Namche trail. This makes your journey shorter compared to starting from Salleri.

Who Should Choose the Road Option?

If you want to avoid flying to Lukla, you can choose the roads. Trekkers who are travelling during the monsoon or winter, when flights often get cancelled. Required Permits for the Journey 

To reach Namche Bazaar, each trekker must have the correct permits. The region is protected and carefully managed. These permits help to support local Communities, maintain trekking trails, and conserve the natural environment. There are two main necessary permits:

Sagarmatha National Park Permit 

This permit is required to enter Sagarmatha National Park. That area includes Namche Bazaar, Everest Base Camp, and many surrounding villages.

Where to Get It: You can buy this permit in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board. You can also buy it at the national park entry gate in Monjo.

Cost: The cost is different for foreigners, SARRC nationals, and Nepali citizens. Foreigners have to pay around NPR 3,000. SARRC nationals have to pay around NPR 1,500. Nepali citizens have to pay NPR 100. This fee helps to protect wildlife, forests, and the natural ecosystem of the park.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit 

This Local permit replaces the old TIMS card for the Everest region. It goes directly to the development of villages in Khumbu.

Where to Get It: You can purchase this permit at Lukla or at Monjo.

Cost: The price rate is different for foreigners and  SARRC nationals. Foreign trekkers have to pay NPR 2,000 during the off-season. During peak season, they cost you around 2,000 – 2,500. For SARRC nationals, they have to pay the same price or slightly lower. This permit helps to maintain trails, build local facilities, and support Sherpa communities.
